Lovejoy

Code 2
Lovejoy is a crooked antiques dealer. But he is no more crooked than most and less so than many. He is a lovable rogue, who is always short of money, but who will often make less than he could from a deal because of his philanthropic inner self. This is a great show set in English country towns and villages, mainly in their auction rooms. The game is to spot a bargain and then win it with a low bid, because no one else has realised it's true value. Of course this may require a bit of tampering with the merchandise on display. Further tampering by applying wood dyes and patinas are employed to increase the desirability of goods that punters might otherwise pass on. Tink and Eric are Lovejoy's colourful sidekicks. At the time of writing the series was not available at amazon.com in US on DVD, but was on VHS tape.

Flambards

Code 2
A lovely television series about an English country estate. Set in the period roughly between 1910 and 1920, it encompasses the First World War and shows the transition from horses to cars as the normal means of transport. Nice countryside, rides with the hunt, flights in early aeroplanes and catchy music.

Dances with Wolves

Code 2
A fabulous movie with incredible scenery and lovely music. The acting is great too. Hero soldier John Dunbar, played by Kevin Costner, is posted to the 1860s American frontier. Manning a lonely outpost he encounters and eventually befriends some native Sioux Indians. The more he gets to understand them, the more he feels an affinity for their way of life and values, when compared with those of the increasingly numerous white men, of which he is one.

Anna and the King

Code 2
Anna and the King is loosely based on Anna Leonowens accounts of her time as a Governess, in the King of Siam's court. Even the accuracy of Anna's original stories is a subject of controversy. However this beautifully filmed movie is full of atmosphere. It's easy to get absorbed into the re-created Siam of the 1860s. It contains some interesting Thai style music, quite different to that in the musical of the same story "The King and I", which was also a wonderful movie.

Horatio Hornblower

Code 2
Ioan Gruffudd plays Horatio Hornblower in adventures based on the famous books by C. S. Forrester. I've always enjoyed seafaring adventures such as "Damn the Defiant", "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "Master and the Commander". The problem is they are always too short. Luckily there are many adventures involving Hornblower. Robert Lindsay also makes regular appearances as Edward Pellew.

Gladiator

Code 2
This movie just works so much better than some of the other modern attempts at historical epics. For example I found Troy to be tedious. Normally I prefer movies with Brad Pitt to those with Russell Crowe, but Gladiator kept me enthralled throughout. Joaquin Phoenix was fantastic as an ineffectual, snivelling Caesar. Gladiator was also Oliver Reed's final movie, he died before shooting was completed.
