CUBBY-HOLE

Cubby-Hole is not a blog, since a blog suggests some kind of sequential diary. Cubby-Hole is a repository of facts, thoughts, influences, opinions and other snippets of information, which are logged, as when they occur, or are remembered retrospectively by the Cubby-Holer.

According to my copy of the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, a Cubby-Hole is "a small enclosed space or room".

I don't think that definition does a Cubby-Hole justice. In my mind a Cubby-Hole is a space, where a person might store or hide away their most treasured possessions, secrets or even themselves. With the advent of storing documents and graphics digitally, the definition of a Cubby-Hole could be extended to include secret virtual Cubby-Holes in cyber space.

This Cubby-Hole is different, it is not secret, because it can be seen by the internet browsing public.

What is the purpose of Cubby-Hole? It is a place where facts can be logged along with thoughts, influences, opinions and other snippets of information. Cubby-Hole can be thought of as an extended evolving mind map. The map is represented by the links in the Cubby-Hole. The end lines or bottom level links lead to textual and graphic detail. In some cases the detail may be reached from multiple higher level links. For example a topic about people eating fried insects in Asia, might be reached from the Travel link and also from the Food & Drink link.

The reason Cubby-Hole exists, is because as we age, we must wonder, what was the point of all the education and experience that we have received, if it dies in our brains, when we die.

What is the difference between Cubby-Hole and a Dictionary or Encyclopedia? Dictionaries and Encyclopedias record only facts, or what are presumed to be facts. The purpose of Cubby-Hole is to add thoughts, opinions and experiences to facts. The thoughts, opinions and experiences may not be related to facts as they are currently known.

Facts change over time. Pluto was for many years a planet.

Each Cubby-Hole contains only what is or was important to one individual, whereas a Dictionary or Encyclopedia contains presumed facts collected from many sources.

It seems sensible as a species to keep some semblance of immortality, by passing on facts, thoughts, influences, opinions and other snippets of information to future generations who might benefit from them.
